Let's go to the maul
This week Reanimated jumped back to 1978 for some more of that sweet elixir only George Romero can distill with Dawn of the Dead. We also riffed on some hole-up sites and zombie survival fortification options.
Um..apparently there is a zombie themed NY running group - Zombie sprint lab. Honestly I think it's just an excuse for masochists to hang out.
A new George Romero endeavor ... with Marvel comics!
Do black heroes make zombie stories more interesting? One NPR author thinks so.
Discussion: Safe havens/hole-up sites
Ideally your hideaway should be easily defensible, difficult to find by others, and have access to food water.
1. Shopping mall
Pros: If the power is on, easy access to food, supplies and some weapons.
Cons: A lot of area to defend and be infiltrated. It makes an attractive target for other survivors such as the dreaded Tom Savini and his terrifying mustache comb.
Examples: Dawn of the Dead 1978/2004
2. Costco or Sam's Club
Pros: Moar supplies!
Cons: An even bigger target
Examples: Survivors (BBC) show about pandemic survivors (grocery store warehouse)
3. House/Private home
Pros: Familiar ground
Cons:Too many windows
Examples: Night of Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead
4. Castle/prison/fortified structure
Pros: Built-in defense mechanisms - turrets, walls fences
Cons: Easy to get trapped there. Dangerous when you go foraging beyond protective barriers.
Example: TWD, World War Z book
5. Apt or Apt. building
Pros: Off the ground, easier to defend
Cons: Difficult to exit/enter for supplies
Examples: 28 Days Later
Pros: Low population density
Cons: Defensibility, less access to looting civilization runoff
Examples: TWD season 1, WWZ book Canada, Japan
7. Bar i.e The Winchester
Cons: Too many windows
Example Shaun of the Dead
Build yourself a nice bunker/home. Best of both worlds.

H.A. and Stuart talk about how -
Dawn of the Dead throws the audience in at the deep end of the zombie event.
Society is breaking down, our heroes are making a run for it.
Apparently malls are rare and noteworthy. Also they seem to stock MREs and potable water in the attics. Also, they have attics. Oh, and are nuclear powered.
Some people just shouldn't help. All of them are named Stephen in this film.
Zombies are fun, lovable characters with peppy theme music.
Just as Stephen is horrible at most things, Peter is good at everything. Fran starts off strong, gets a little weaksauce but then is ok again by the end and Roger starts strong, gets weird and ends up mulch.
